Can Tho City, the economic and cultural hub of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region, is positioned to enter Vietnam’s golf tourism map with an ambitious proposal from Royal Investment Group Vietnam. The company has submitted plans for a massive 794-hectare integrated golf-urban development across two strategic locations, potentially transforming the “capital of Southwest Vietnam” into the Mekong Delta’s premier golf destination.

Dual-Location Golf Development Strategy

Royal Investment Group Vietnam Joint Stock Company (Hoang Gia Group) presented its proposal to Can Tho City People’s Committee on October 23, 2025, outlining a comprehensive vision for golf-integrated urban development at two complementary sites.

Location 1: Truong Xuan Commune

The primary development site in Truong Xuan Commune (Thoi Lai District) spans 547 hectares along the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway, approximately 50 kilometers from VSIP Can Tho Industrial Park.

Golf Component: 165+ hectares dedicated to championship golf course facilities

Integrated Urban Development: 381+ hectares for residential, commercial, and service functions

Location 2: Tan Phuoc Hung Commune

The secondary site in Tan Phuoc Hung Commune (Phung Hiep District) covers 220 hectares near National Highway 1, just 8 kilometers from Nga Bay and 38 kilometers from Can Tho city center.

Golf Component: 120 hectares for golf course development

Integrated Urban Development: 100+ hectares for complementary urban functions

Comprehensive Mixed-Use Vision

The proposed development integrates golf with complete urban infrastructure creating a self-contained resort-urban destination:

Golf Course Complex: Championship facilities serving both tourism and local golfer communities

Eco-Urban Areas: Residential zones including high-rise buildings, shophouses, and luxury villas

Commercial Services: Shopping, dining, entertainment, and business facilities

Premium Amenities: Parks, hospitals, schools, and recreational zones supporting long-term community development

This integrated approach reflects modern Vietnamese golf development philosophy—positioning golf as the anchor for comprehensive lifestyle communities rather than standalone sports facilities.

Strategic Significance for Mekong Delta

The Can Tho golf proposal addresses a significant gap in Vietnam’s golf geography. While Northern, Central, and Southern Vietnam have well-developed golf infrastructure, the Mekong Delta region remains underserved despite its economic importance and tourism potential.

Regional Economic Impact:

Sustainable green urban development model

Job creation throughout construction and operational phases

Improved living standards for local communities

Attraction of domestic and international investment

Tourism diversification beyond traditional Mekong Delta river tourism

Tourism Enhancement:

  • Positioning Can Tho as multi-day destination rather than day-trip stop
  • Combining golf with Mekong Delta’s unique river culture and floating markets
  • Attracting affluent domestic Vietnamese golfers from Ho Chi Minh City (approximately 170km away)
  • Creating golf tourism circuits connecting HCMC with Mekong Delta

Current Status and Next Steps

The proposal requires Can Tho City approval for master plan adjustments and land-use conversion from rice cultivation to mixed-use development. Can Tho City People’s Committee Chairman Truong Canh Tuyen directed Royal Investment Group to coordinate with the City Finance Department and relevant agencies on legal procedures and necessary planning adjustments.

The project remains in proposal stage, with regulatory approvals and land conversion permissions required before construction can commence.

Vietnam Golf Expansion Beyond Traditional Centers

The Can Tho proposal exemplifies Vietnam’s golf development evolution beyond established destinations. While Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Ho Chi Minh City dominate current golf tourism, projects like Can Tho extend quality golf infrastructure to economically important regions previously without championship courses.

This geographic expansion supports Vietnam’s goal of 200 operational golf courses by 2030 while distributing golf tourism benefits more equitably across the country.
